Last Sunday, being friendship day, after the service was over, the music group sang the song, “What a friend we have in Jesus”. My friend and I usually sit singing the last song along with the music group and we leave only after the they are done and are packing to leave. As we sat singing the song along with them, I realized the immense meaning behind the song.
It was like the Lord telling me – you guys unnecessarily carru your burdens and your worries around. As a child of God I have this great privilege of casting everything on to God. He actually wants us to do that. To cast all our worries and cares on him. This is the privilege I have as being a child of God.
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Next time you are reminded about something sad in your life or some problem, be wise enough to use this privilege. Not using it is like having a bank balance of 1000 bucks and applying for a loan of 100 bucks. Well, dnno if the illustration quite captured what I tried to ut across but its like having a great way of solving something but still having the problem with me and keeping on worrying, which doesn’t help a bit.
Paul says – don’t worry about anything. Just present your reuest before God with thanksgiving and his peace will rule out hearts and our minds. Kool, isn’t it!!
And like the song goes:
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
How true this is most of the times. Well, the next time you feel bad about something, sing this song.
~What A Friend
This was written by a young man for his mother who was ill. He tried to comfort and encourage her, and intended the poem just for her. No one knew about the words of this beloved hymn until a neighbor was visiting and found it.
Born in Ireland, Joseph Scriven graduated from college and was engaged to a beautiful girl. On the eve of their wedding, the girl drowned. Overwhelmed with grief, he came to Canada and devoted his life to helping the underprivileged, giving them clothes and sharing his food. If anyone could afford his service, he would not work for them.
In 1875, Sankey put up Gospel Hymns No. 1 and included it as the last one in the collection. But later, the last hymn became one of his favorites.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus
(1) What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
(2) Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged-
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness-
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
(3) Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge-
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake theee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield thee-
Thou wilt find a solace there.
Phillipians 4:6,7 - 6Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition ([b]definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.
7And God's peace [shall be yours, that [c]tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [d]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
