In the Road of Life - Part 2 - 16th Aug 2006

It’s again about the driving class that I am going to be writing J

Nervous though we were at the prospect of driving a car for the first time, after about just 20 minutes of learning, my friend started speedingJ. The instructor had to keep telling him - slow down, slow down. There was one thing that the instructor said that quite caught my attention. He said – ‘You’ll never learn if you go fast.’

I just sat there thinking how often have I hurried and rushed through things. Rushed to get ready without praying, rushed through my bible reading because no time, rushed to catch my cab without having breakfast, rushed while speaking to dad and mom on the phone because no time, rushed when my friend needed help, rushed when my brother wanted to share a joke with me, rushed through an email to someone who really needed it.

Just like the Pharisee and the Levite rushed to their respective places even though the Jew was lying there beaten up by the thieves. It was the Good Samaritan who stopped to help. He had his own important work to do but yet he decided to stop.

Things that seem important to me may not be important to God. What God wants more than anything is that he should be given the most importance? If in my busy schedule I can stop…… when God wants me to, to help or encourage or comfort and bring joy to someone….. Well, that’s when I become a Good Samaritan.

There are times we need to stop. We miss out on so much – some beautiful moments with our family and friends, bonding well with our family and friends, enjoying God’s beauty around us……. There’s so much of love, beauty and joy that we miss by just going fast.

Probably what the driving instructor said applies to life as well – ‘you’ll never learn, if you go fast (I mean, if you have no time to stop)…….

Luke 10: 30 - 37
Jesus, [
f]taking him up, replied, A certain man was going from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him of his clothes and belongings and beat him and went their way, [[g]unconcernedly] leaving him half dead, as it happened.
31Now by [
h]coincidence a certain priest was going down along that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32A Levite likewise came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side [of the road].
33But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled along, came down to where he was; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity and sympathy [for him],
34And went to him and dressed his wounds, pouring on [them] oil and wine. Then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
35And the next day he took out two denarii [two day's wages] and gave [them] to the innkeeper, saying, Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I [myself] will repay you when I return.
36Which of these three do you think proved himself a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?
37He answered, The one who showed pity and mercy to him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise.
